A Mother's Testimony: Become a Companion

We believe that everyone has the opportunity to help someone else, whether they directly have Special Needs, or if they know someone, we believe that by providing this FREE training to YOU, then you will be able to make an impact.

The Unicorn Children’s Foundation will be hosting a training on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 9am to 5pm at the Boca Raton Children’s Museum to increase the availability of high quality respite care providers in Palm Beach and Broward County. Respite provides temporary relief for families from the ongoing responsibility of caring for an individual with special needs.

This 8 hour workshop is based on a national evidence-based model from REST to provide care companions with the tools necessary to help them build confidence and provide high-quality respite care to adults and children. No prior experience is required to attend this very interactive training program, only a desire to help strengthen families and our community.

One mom shared, “I struggled a lot as a parent of 3 children with special needs. The diagnoses initially were overwhelming. Because of my profession as a therapist, I found myself feeling incompetent as a mother AND therapist, feeling I should be able to handle the circumstances. However, respite made space available for me to do my own therapy as well as continue my studies; I was able to release those limiting beliefs and learn how to be really present for my children...and husband. Our family has strengthened as a result. This has been a life changing support for me. I will forever be in gratitude!”

Do you have what it takes to give caregivers the break they need to refresh and recharge so they can keep up caring for their loved ones without burning out? A $10 registration fee is required to reserve your spot but is refundable upon completion of the course. Contact Ivonne Rodriguez, certified REST Companion Trainer at (561) 620-9377 ext. 306 for more information. Interested parties may also register online at UnicornChildrensFoundation.org/Companion.

Project SEARCH Application Now Online!

In partnership with Boca West Country Club, Unicorn Children’s Foundation and Unicorn Village Academy will launch a job training internship program for young adults with disabilities in August of 2018. Interns will range in age from 17-24 years of age who have an intellectual or developmental disability which makes it statistically more difficult for them to find jobs upon completion of high school. The unemployment rate for youth with disabilities is approximately 80% despite their ability and willingness to work. With the launch of the Project SEARCH site at Boca West Country Club, it is expected that at least 74% of interns will find competitive and meaningful employment following graduation.

Students should currently be enrolled in a Palm Beach County, Broward County or other private school and be interested in increasing independence, confidence and self-esteem while learning competitive, transferable, and marketable job skills. Unicorn Children’s Foundation unveils exciting Special Percs CafĂ©© initiative at wildly successful Disco-themed Gala

On Sunday March 4th, 2018, The Unicorn Children’s Foundation, along with chairs Gregory Fried and Kurtis Lutz, hosted its first ever, non-formal, Disco & Diamonds Gala at the Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida.  The evening was a resounding success, and had several surprises for guests, not the least of which was the unveiling of an exciting new initiative: the Special Percs CafĂ©©.

Guests, arriving in disco attire, were greeted with a wide range of exciting Silent Auction items during cocktail hour, followed by a Live auction including such rarities as two tickets to the Steve Harvey show with backstage tour, and 13K color sapphire & diamond earrings, generously donated by Gregory’s Fine Jewelry.

There was also a special recognition of honorees who work every day to support, advocate for, and empower individuals who think, communicate, and learn differently–

Melissa Hassan, teacher extraordinaire at Unity School in Delray Beach, was inducted into Unicorn’s Visionary Society, an exclusive club that recognizes extraordinary women who are united by their acts of generosity to help kids with special needs excel in the community.

Michael Simpson, Owner at Little Stinker LLC, and Richard Rawlings, of the Gas Monkey Foundation, were both inducted into the prestigious Order of Unicorn, which consists of philanthropic men who have demonstrated their commitment to improving the quality of life for those with special needs through generous financial contributions.

Dominique Rivera, 2017 Royal International Miss Teen, was awarded the Unicorn Youth in Service award in recognition of her exceptional volunteer work in her community on behalf of individuals challenged with invisible disorders.  Dominique then wowed the crowd with a personal heartfelt performance of ‘My Life’ by Donna Summer, which brought tears to the eyes of many.

The event culminated with the unveiling of Unicorn’s very exciting new program: the Special Percs CafĂ©©, an initiative designed to address gaps in cradle to career pathways for kids and young adults with special needs.  In partnership with Mammoth Coffee Roasting Co, a California based small batch roasting coffee company, this cafĂ© will provide vocational training and employment options for young adults with special needs.  Unicorn hopes to create a path for these individuals to become more valued, accepted and included within the community through meaningful employment options in a competitive high-demand industry, as well as give their lives meaning and purpose one cup at a time, while providing a high quality customer experience.

Finally, when the event ‘concluded’, guests were treated to one final surprise: the opening of a Studio 54 themed disco after party, where the acclaimed 11 person Private Stock Band brought down the house for many hours, complete with disco balls, lasers, full dessert bar, and more.

A big THANK YOU to this year’s supporters: Gail Wasserman Family Foundation, Silvana & Barry Halperin, Sunshine Health, United Capital, Berkowitz Pollack Brant Advisors and Accountants, Schmidt Family Foundation, Anne & Norman Jacobson, Gregory’s Fine Jewelry, Mammoth Coffee Roasting Company, D3 Advertising, Simple The Best Magazine, the Boca West Country Club, and finally a joint partnership between BNY Mellon and Ouzo Bay restaurant, who provided the amazing Wine Wall at registration.

With 1 of every 6 children affected by some form of intellectual or developmental disability, most of us have experienced the challenges first-hand or know someone who has.  There are a wide range of opportunities to be involved; to connect and learn more about the Unicorn Children's Foundation please visit www.UnicornChildrensFoundation.org
