Voting Resources for Older Americans and People with Disabilities

Via: Administration for Community Living (ACL)

Election day, November 8, is right around the corner. Several federal laws protect the voting rights of older Americans and people with disabilities and require accessible polling places.

Here are some voting resources for older adults and people with disabilities :
·         Individuals living in long-term care facilities who have concerns about exercising their right to vote can contact their long-term care ombudsman program by looking them up at the National Ombudsman Resource Center.
·         Some Area Agencies on Aging and Aging and Disability Resource Centers may offer rides. Visit the Eldercare Locator website to find one in your community.

State Protection and Advocacy Systems (P&As) are another valuable resource. The Voting Access Program, Help America Vote Act (HAVA) administered by ACL, provides funding to P&As to support efforts to ensuring full participation by people with disabilities in the electoral process, including registering to vote, casting a vote, and accessing polling places.

P&As are responsible for the following HAVA activities:
·         Full participation in the electoral process;
·         Education, training and assistance;
·         Advocacy and education around HAVA implementation efforts;
·         Training and education of election officials, poll workers, and election volunteers regarding the rights of voters with disabilities and best practices;
·         Assistance in filing complaints;
·         Assistance to state and other governmental entities regarding the physical accessibility of polling places; and
·         Obtaining training and technical assistance on voting issues.

Each P&A determines the best mix of HAVA services to provide based on the needs of their community. To find your state P&A for requesting assistance with voting, visit this website and select your state.

Finally, the Southeast ADA Center has compiled an up-to-date Resource List (PDF) with more information on accessible voting.

Boca West Foundation Leadership Council Breakfast

What a lovely morning at the Leadership Council Breakfast! We are so grateful to be one of the 24 non-profits chosen to participate in Boca West Foundation Week again this year! Thank you to Arthur Adler and Boca West Foundation for the opportunity.

Early Voting

Via: Florida Developmental Disabilities Council

Early voting has started in many locations. Just as it is important to know that your vote counts, we need to know that you have the accessibility needed to make it count; therefore, we are collecting surveys to learn about the voting experiences of people with disabilities for the 2016 Election.
You can help us do that by completing a survey developed by Self Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE), Disability Rights Florida, and other Protection & Advocacy and self-advocacy organizations across the country.

Vote for Greg!

Our President, Gregory Fried is quickly catching up to First Place!! Is he your Favorite Queen of the Night?

CafĂ© Med Ristorante unveils new specialty dish; proceeds to support Unicorn Children’s Foundation!

Boca Raton FL – October 2016 – Unicorn Children’s Foundation is proud to announce a close partnership with the CafĂ© Med Ristorante, located on the premises of the Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort!  A beautiful restaurant facing a gorgeous stretch of beach next to the pier and probably the only local restaurant offering “Authentic Italian Food”. CafĂ© Med Ristorante specializes in seafood, steaks and pasta. It offers a full range menu of amazing dishes put together by their own celebrity Chef Lillo Teodosi. Teodosi was the Chef owner/partner of Caruso Ristorante in Boca Raton, Florida, Trattoria Pizzeria Roma and Topo Gigio Ristorante in Chicago, Illinois.

In addition to being a strong supporter of the Unicorn Children’s Foundation by sponsoring exciting upcoming events, CafĂ© Med has recently added a new dish to their menu – “Petti di Pollo alla Milanese”.  In an incredibly generous gesture, a portion of proceeds of every single dish will be donated directly to our Foundation!

We here at Unicorn are beyond proud of this relationship with Wyndham, and are very excited to continue moving forward with strong community partners such as Wyndham to connect the community, advocate on behalf of those with special needs, provide resources for families, and encourage everyone to make a difference in the lives of neurodiverse children that are challenged with special needs.
